Crazy For You review, May 2008 - NODA
Indulgence in its Truest Sense Indulgence in its truest sense is an inability to resist the gratification of whims and desires. In their 50th Anniversary were self indulgent but the beneficiaries were the audience. With an excellent set, a big stage venue and costumes to die for, this was the best BATS show that I have seen.
From the outset, Trevor Defferd drove the orchestra with a pace and vigour that challenged all on stage to match. The casting was ideal with the ebullient Bryn Hughes as Bobby Child. His stage presence from the outset made the audience warm to his character. The fact that he can sing and dance more than a bit helped also! His opposite number played by the luminous Clare Ryan as Polly Baker matched Bryn note-for-note and step-for-step in excellence. She also handled the pathos of her character wonderfully bringing a sad tone to her songs.
Dave Scalan's Lank, Zoe Tame's Irene and Rob Wilson's madcap Zangler, whose routine with Bobby in the second act was a triumph, gave performances of quality and added to the overall upbeat nature of the show.
BATS were blessed in this performance by a "chorus" of quality. As befits lead players in a support role, they sung, danced and acted their hearts out and the show was that much stronger of their efforts. The close harmony singing was excellent.
This is a showy show and the dance troupe prepared by the director and polished until they shone by Libby Stockel put the icing on a fine entertainment. There was no idle tapping and all dancers performed like pros.
BATS over the last 50 years have given many performances of heart and quality and truly deserve this Crazy for You. It will be remembered as one of the best (to date).
