Grease is still the one that they want! With sell-out performances, the Seventies feel-good musical shows no sign of losing its appeal to all ages and the most popular movie songs, previously unavailable to stage companies, were here and Angus Jacobs did a fine job of combining the roles of Director and Choreographer.
Although the audience clearly enjoyed the songs, the quality of the vocals didn’t always quite reach that of the dancing. Craig Saunders was a very confident Danny Zuko and Rhianon Mone’s metamorphosis from shrinking violet to vamp, as Sandy, was particularly enjoyable.
The role of Betty Rizzo also needs to be well-cast and Chloe Ballard ticked all the boxes. Among the supporting cast, Jade Hollingshead’s comic performance as Jan and Gary J. Myers (as Miss Lynch) caught my eye. The bought-in set was the best I’ve seen for this show and Julie Dance led a tight orchestra. Grease is still the one that they want!
